Selma Greenberg Memorial Fund Grant
Hofstra University $2,500
The Girl Scout E-Troop, eighth grade girls at Roosevelt Junior High, will continue a second year of meetings, maintaining technological awareness through exposure to innovative software, mentoring, social activism and research.
Proceeds from this memorial fund were supplemented by funding from the LIFWG to fulfill the grant request.
Focusing on ensuring that women's voices are included in the political process, especially concerning decisions and choices that affect them.
Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center $5,000
To support "Teens as Leaders -- Women in the Political Process", a program to educate and empower future female voters to be proactive participants in the political world.
The Workplace Project $5,000
The Unity Housecleaners Cooperative will establish a domestic workers bill of rights campaign to bring pressure on employers and government officials to raise wages and working conditions of those women.
Promoting education and activism that address gender related issues, including reproductive choice and civil liberties.
Lutheran Counseling Center $3,000
A pilot project, "Healing and Wholeness: Pathways to a Brighter Day", to provide emotional support and grief counseling for uninsured women and girls who have experienced childbirth loss.
Planned Parenthood of Nassau County $3,000
To support "Voices for Choice" to counter anti-women's rights issues, and participation in political activism.
Suffolk County Perinatal Coalition $4,000
The Protection Connection -- a program for at risk, underserved teenage daughters of SCPC clients who were themselves teen parents. Main goals are pregnancy prevention and development of peer leaders.
Addressing systemic problems that have a negative effect on women and girls such as discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, age, race, creed or physical ability.
Mary & Elizabeth Center $3,000
To support a gathering of women of many faiths, cultures, ages, and income levels to share their experiences at monthly luncheons, building understanding and developing leadership skills.
Pride for Youth $3,000
A peer education program to educate lesbian and bisexual women about common health problems and to sensitize the community to homophobia.
Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center $3,500
Two year summer program for a law student to intern with an organization focused on women's advocacy or assistance to be called, The Long Island Fund for Women and Girls Public Interest Fellowship.
MOMMA'S House $3,500
To continue a project helping young mothers negotiate the family court system to establish paternity and begin collecting child support.
Highlighting the issues of gender equity in education with programs that encourage girls and young women to pursue math, science, engineering, technology, the trades and sport.
Citizens Environmental Research Institute - The GREEN Project $4,000
To help 12 to 15 year old girls increase interest in fields of math, science and technology while providing positive role models in a safe environment.
Dowling College $4,000
Fourteen female students with an interest in aviation will be given the opportunity to attend a Summer Aviation camp program, providing exposure to the aviation and aerospace industries, which are among the fastest growing fields in the country.
North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center $3,500
A mathematics mentoring program for approximately 30 middle school girls from Westbury, which includes tutoring and workshops by female professionals from the field of mathematics.
Establishing initiatives that deal with problems of harassment in schools or the workplace, or the rise in bullying and/or gang related violence.
Child Abuse Prevention Services $3,000
Continued support of "Step Up and Speak Out" and "What's Up? Girl Talk", programs designed to counter the rise of bullying in schools through healthy communication.
Delta Minerva Life Development Center $2,500
Support third annual all-day conference for adolescent girls to help girls cultivate positive relationships and to counter negative pressures related to gang activities in schools.
Enhancing the skills and abilities of women and girls, particularly those necessary for leadership, positive self-image and increased earning power.
AA2 $4,000
Workshops and training for Asian American women ages 15-24 to deal with issues of depression, sexual violence prevention, suicide, sexual decision making, leadership skills and career choices.
Henry Waldinger Memorial Library $1,400
To fund a young adult mother/daughter reading group, giving mothers and daughters the opportunity to talk to each other and to explore women's issues here and around the world.
Long Beach Latino Civic Association $2,500
Presentations of health and mental health topics combined with the acquisition of homemaking arts and crafts skills for Long Beach Hispanic women and girls.
Long Island Council of Churches $3,500
"Women at the Well" program providing spiritual, emotional, social and material support to women inmates released from the Nassau County jail.
Madonna Heights District $1,600
Program for at risk girls 12 --17 years of age to build skills through an art program, providing an avenue for self-expression and the development of a positive self-image.
National Coalition of 100 Black Women $2,000
To enhance the development of girls in grades 9-12 and to empower them to seek leadership roles in their schools and communities through the Teen Leadership Institute.
Regina Residence - Catholic Charities $2,000
Purchase of equipment and educational toys for the child care center, currently being renovated, broadening the center's scope and enabling young mothers to pursue educational and employment opportunities
Sisters Divinely Connected Ministries $3,500
"Breakthrough Mentoring Program" for at-risk girls, ages 10-13 in Wyandanch Middle School to help them overcome obstacles to academic, social, professional and financial leadership.
The Opening Word Program, Inc. $2,000
Literacy and job training program to unlock language ability for personal empowerment, increased civic and social responsibility and enhanced job skills.
The Uniform Locker $3,000
To fund the acquisition of uniforms and accessories required by low-income women and girls to complete training and secure jobs in the health, service, and eldercare fields.
Unity Circle of Hempstead $2,500
To build a network of support among mothers, to strengthen parenting and problem solving skills, and to enhance the ability of mothers to advocate on behalf of themselves and their children.
Wyandanch Homes and Property Development Corp. $2,000
To provide homeless and at-risk women and their children entering affordable housing with critical social services and financial education to enable them to become economically self-sufficient.
Promoting physical and mental health, and ensuring the safety of women and girls.
Adults and Children With Learning and Developmental Disabilities $2,500
To expand services and hours of the Women's Health Services Center, establishing a desensitization program to prepare women with special needs for gynecological visits.
Coalition on Child Abuse and Neglect $3,000
To support the continuance of "Project Kidz Talk", a peer support group for child sex abuse victims and their non-offending family members, assisting in recovery and empowering them to help others and keep themselves safe from future abuse.
Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America $2,500
An all day educational program for women and adolescent girls who have Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, helping them understand their chronic disease and cope with the symptoms and side effects.
Harbor Child Care $3,000
The Task Force Against Childhood Violence will publish printed materials informing women who are victims of domestic violence about the danger of these attacks on the developing brains of their very young children. Materials advise women of their rights and how to prevent future attacks.
Herstory Writers Workshop, Inc. $5,000
Creation of a training manual for twelve Herstory leaders to guide attendees in their therapeutic memoir writing.
Hispanic Counseling Center $3,000
To end the cycle of domestic violence, the Children of Domestic Violence program is designed to show children who have witnessed abuse an alternate view of life, integrating treatment of children and mothers.
National Association of Mother's Centers $2,500
To fund a collaborative project with Postpartum Resource Center of New York for a Maternal Depression Training Program and support services for 700+ mothers.
Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence $3,000
A health project to ensure that women who present with domestic/dating violence or elder abuse in medical settings will receive appropriate information, assessment, documentation, treatment and linkage to resources.
Peconic Community Council $4,000
To provide emergency fiscal relief for women at risk for homelessness, enabling them to retain their housing.
Roosevelt Community Mental Health Center $2,000
To support groups for young women on topics that will address skill development, promote self-care and self-awareness, enhance decision-king skills, and encourage healthy relationships.
Rota-Care -- Free Health Care For People in Need $4,000
Payment of lab services and GYN exams for between 50 and 100 women who cannot afford health care.
Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence $2,000
To fund the reprinting of brochures for teens on the topic of dating violence, which will be used in conjunction with their youth education program.
Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center $2,500
To fund a bereavement program for female-female couples in Nassau County experiencing devastating grief, offering a place to go for support -- a critical and immediate need.
South Fork Community Health Initiative $2,500
"De Mujer a Mujer...Women to Women" -- Series of workshops to empower Hispanic women. Topics include healthcare, self-improvement and parenting skills.
The Retreat $2,500
In-School Violence Prevention Program that includes addressing and preventing dating violence, teaching students to identify violent and abusive situations and keep themselves from harm.
Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk $2,500
To provide counseling services to adolescent girls who have experienced sexual abuse and/or harassment trauma.
